Community Consultation No. 6

Restoration exhibition success in Stroud

Over a hundred people stopped by to view the Saul to Stonehouse Waterway Restoration Exhibition at Stroud’s Merrywalks Shopping Centre on Saturday 4th July.
This was the last of six such exhibitions presented by a team led by Val Kirby.

Raising awareness in the canal-side communities

Val commented, “The team presented a terrific programme of public consultation events. The aim was to raise awareness of the restoration proposals in the canal-side communities that will be affected by the restored waterway. The funding bid is being prepared for submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund in November.

"We started in mid-May with the press event on Westfield Bridge* on the route of the canal near Eastington, and finished with the sixth exhibition in Merrywalks Shopping Centre. We are very pleased with the coverage provided by the local newspapers, BBC Radio Gloucestershire and BBC TV.”

The exhibitions were held in Gloucester, Whitminster, Frampton-on-Severn, Stonehouse, Eastington and Stroud.

Former CCT Chairman Bruce Hall visited the exhibition in Stroud. Bruce is pictured below in discussion with CCT Chief Executive Ken Burgin.

Thanks for support

Val Kirby adds, “There has been a fantastic level of public support. I would like to pass my thanks to everyone who took time to study the exhibition and record their views. Thank you also to those who helped to stage the events. Whether you were working on publicity, looking after the exhibition between events, putting it up, wrestling with folding tables, talking to visitors, making tea, or assisting people to fill in questionnaires.”
