Hello and welcome to ENews 2008-6.

A bit shorter this time, I got told off for the last one being too long!

The objective of ENews is to advise, inform and update. And maybe even to amuse from time to time.

CAST OFF THE CAST OFFS

Courtesy of the Friends of the Waterways Museum, the Trust has been offered free space at the forthcoming Gloucester Docks Boat Jumble that takes place on Sunday 6th April.

Roger Wells, email ForWells@jodarolo.freeserve.co.uk who is the leader of the Monday & Wednesday morning shenanigans at the Western Depot, Eastington – just off the M5 junction 13 for those of you who may be uncertain as to where it is – will be happy to accept, as he puts it, any sa(i)leable items. They do not need to be boat specific, as allsorts (not the liquorice variety) were sold last time we did this.

FACING THE JURY – AGAIN

I have received the following advice:-

"The House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee is set to re-examine British Waterways' regeneration and restoration role, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO BW'S DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM THE COTSWOLD CANAL PARTNERSHIP.

The Committee invites all interested parties to submit a brief written memorandum setting out their views on this matter.

THE DEADLINE FOR ACCEPTING MEMORANDA IS MONDAY 10 MARCH 2008.

Notes For Submitters
Submissions should be in Word or rich text format and sent by e-mail to kubalam@parliament.uk. The body of the e-mail must include a contact name, telephone number and postal address. The e-mail should also make clear who the submission is from.
Submissions must address the terms of reference. They should be as brief as possible, and no more than 1,500 words. Paragraphs should be numbered for ease of reference, and the document must include an executive summary (no more than one page long).
Committees make public much of the evidence they receive during inquiries. If you do not wish your submission to be published, you must clearly say so. If you wish to include private or confidential information in your submission to the Committee, please contact the Clerk of the Committee to discuss this. Please bear in mind that Committees are not able to investigate individual cases.
Personal information, such as address and contact details, should be provided separately from the body of your submission. You should be aware that there may be circumstances in which the House of Commons will be required to communicate information to third parties on request, in order to comply with its obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Submissions should be original work, not previously published or circulated elsewhere. Once submitted, no public use should be made of the submission unless you have first obtained permission from the Committee.

In all probability the Trust will be submitting a single co-ordinated response to this opportunity.

In addition, anybody is welcome to make a submission in their own name, but do please make sure you follow the 'Notes for Submitters' if you want your opinion to be heard.

A large response will draw attention to the issue ….and who knows where that could lead?

CREWS FOR CRUISE

Would you believe there's less than a month to go to the start of our trip boat season?

It recommences at Lechlade with 'Inglesham' on Good Friday 21st March and at Saul with 'Perseverance' on Saturday 22nd.

Please heed the crew requests if you possibly can, especially after the awful weather last year that affected the 2007 season. Fingers crossed that both boats will be able to operate on all scheduled operating days this year……

OPPORTUNITIES GALORE

Talking of things getting close, the Saul Festival is but a matter of weeks away as well, less than 20 to be nearly precise.

You will derive tremendous benefits when you offer your services at this fantastic fun-filled festivity, not least of which is free entry to the Festival site*. All we ask in return is that you volunteer for just two 2-hour shifts sometime during the weekend.
(*In case you are wondering, others include the wonderful camaraderie, the buzz, the cheap beer, the abundance and variety of food… the list goes on and on.)

8TH March: 35th Anniversary Dinner at the Whitminster Hotel, Whitminster. The hotel is on the A38 just north of the roundabout that takes the A419 to M5 junction 13 and then on to Stonehouse, Stroud etc.
