Liaising with your Lawyer

If you are leaving a legacy to the Trust it would be very helpful if you it payable to The Cotswold Canals Trust (Reg. Charity No. 269721).

It would also be helpful if we could have a note of it, without of course putting you under any obligation.

If you’ve decided to remember The Cotswold Canals Trust in your will, you might like to provide the following suggested wording to your solicitor:

If you choose to leave a Residuary Legacy:

Subject to the payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, I give (… per cent) of the residue of my estate, both real and personal, to Cotswold Canals Trust, Bell House, Wallbridge Lock, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 3JS. Registered charity number 269721, for their general purposes and the receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

If you choose to leave a specific sum of money – A Pecuniary Legacy:

I give free of tax to The Cotswold Canals Trust, Bell House, Wallbridge Lock, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 3JS. Registered charity number 269721, the sum of …, for their general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

If you choose to leave a property as a legacy – A Specific Legacy:

I give my property known as … or any other property which I may own at the date of my death to The Cotswold Canals Trust, Bell House, Wallbridge Lock, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 3JS. Registered charity number 269721 and I request (without imposing any binding trust or obligation) that if possible it be used to provide funds to further the aims of the Trust and I declare that the receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

Updating your Will

Once a Will has been made it is important to keep it up to date to take into account any changes in your circumstances.

Keeping the Will current is as important as making one in the first place. It is the only way to ensure that your final estate is distributed in the way that you want it to be.
