Merrywalks Bridge Bulletin No.50

A report from Nigel Edgeworth

Concrete pours have taken place to form the southeast and southwest wing walls.

Bricklaying has been on-going on the north wing walls, north pilasters and towpath wall.

Due to the skew of the bridge the corners on some of the pilasters do not form clear right angles. Therefore, special bricks have been made at Northcott Brick Ltd, at Blockley Brickworks, Moreton in Marsh.

We have now started on the road works.
Drainage & kerbs have been laid to the
north of the bridge. See above right.
Excavation for the gabion retaining structure
on the northwest side of the bridge is now completed.

This structure will support the embankment on the northwest edge of the works.
The gabion baskets are now in place. See right.

Next week will see gabion baskets being filled, the reinstatement of the park area to the northeast and continuation of the brickwork.

We will also be laying ducts for Central Networks to provide a new power supply for a customer. This will also allow the diversion of an overhead cable that currently crosses the Wallbridge Lower Lock.

When that diversion is completed works can commence on restoring the lock, which is being organised by Stroud District Council.
