Restoration Reveals War Relics

Dudbridge Locks restoration reveals World War II relics

Following the dredging of Dudbridge Locks a steel helmet, possibly once worn by an Air Raid warden, was recovered from the silt at the bottom of the lock.

A sinister find

The second find on Thursday 5th September was somewhat more sinister… a live hand grenade was discovered in the excavated material.

A Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal team attended and disposed of the grenade by a controlled explosion on nearby open land.

Interesting finds

Land & Water's Senior Site manager Chris Spencer commented, "People often ask us the question… 'Have you found anything interesting?'

"We have been finding lots of bottles, probably from the Victoria Tap pub close to the locks. We are told it was run by a lady called Annie Clark.

"The hand grenade was a bit different though. It was a classic pineapple shaped thing that made a loud bang when the bomb squad dealt with it nearby"
