A report from Ken Bailey
Stroud’s towpath walkers will be delighted to hear that Cotswold Canals Trust volunteers reopened the towpath at Griffin Mill Lock on Saturday 17th December.
OS Ref: SO 858036
Eight volunteers erected forty Herras fence panels from the lower bund to the top bund and round the spill weir.
Many wheel-barrow loads of crushed stone & rubble, recovered from various parts of the site, were then placed to form a reasonable towpath surface through the mud.
A number of drainage channels were also cut to allow the site to dry out.
A section of the concrete block dam, constructed across the head of the lock in the mid-1970s, was removed in readiness for volunteers to commence work early in the New Year.
