A “People's Millions” Special Edition

Dear ENews Subscriber,

A slightly different edition this time round as we would very much like to try and support our colleagues at the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. Please read on to find out how you can help!

Those of you who have received ENews for some little while now may well remember that the CCT has been the recipient of grants from ITV’s “People’s Millions” Lottery on 2 separate occasions, namely:

– £80,000 towards the Brimscombe Port Walls project in November 2007

– £57,000 towards general towpath improvements and a podcast heritage trail in July 2011

Our success in both awards was due to the tremendous level of support we received from not only CCT members but from friends, waterways organisations and other interested parties nationwide.

Well, it’s our turn to help this time round. Our near neighbours, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust*, have applied to the Big Lottery People’s Millions fund for a grant of £50,000 to enable them to change a landfill site at Studley Grange, Royal Wootton Bassett into a wildlife trail.

This project will restore a kilometre of canal and create a wildlife friendly place with water, hedges, wild banks & trees that will encourage water voles, bees, birds and other wildlife. It will be good for us humans, too – for walkers, cyclists and those that just want to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.

As is the custom with the People’s Millions lottery each year, votes will be cast by phone. However the telephone number is not released until the day of the broadcast – Wednesday 26th November – so please make an appropriate note in your diary now!

ITV West Country News is the place to be at 18:00 as the project will be highlighted sometime during the 30-minute programme.

Meanwhile you can register your support for the project on the People’s Millions website at where there is also more information about the application. Please note that registering and supporting the project on this website does not count as voting.

The Wilts & Berks’ website address is and the phone number will appear on both this and the People's Millions one; it will also be published in the Daily Mirror on the morning of the 26th. Alternatively you could phone the W&B Office on 01793 855157 to get the number.

(*For the pedants amongst you who may be wondering where the “connection with the Stroudwater, Thames and Severn or the CCT before considering any article for publication” is…..please think Latton Basin where the two canals will merge – albeit eventually!).
