All aboard the Stroud Special

Stroud is Special

Representatives of Stroud’s business & tourist attractions spent the afternoon of Monday 21st May on Paddington Railway Station concourse promoting Stroud’s business and tourist attractions in conjunction with First Great Western’s ‘Stroud Special’ rail tickets offer.

Organisation & Display Genius

The promotion event was conceived and masterminded by Stroud Chamber of Commerce chair Carole Garfield.

‘Gerb’ Gerbrands, of Stroud Farmers Market fame, drove to Paddington and brought with him not only a large vanload of equipment and promotional material, but his genius in staging an impactive display.

All Hands to the Task

Gerb directed all present, including local MP Neil Carmichael and Stroud Textiles Ian Mackintosh, in trademark top-hat, (pictured right) in the rapid assembly and dressing of a six by three metre area in the busiest part of Paddington station.

Members of other groups included Stroud Subscription Rooms, Stroud Farmers Market, Stroud in Bloom, Art Couture Painswick and The Cotswold Canals Trust.

Brochures on many events and attractions were handed to hundreds of commuters.

Positively smooth

Frances Day of Art Couture – Painswick commented “I was amazed at what a rich and fascinating array of interests were represented and although I’ve lived here 20 years it made me appreciate the area even more.

“The positive attitude displayed by the team was excellent and the smooth way that everything took place was a credit to everyone.”

Original Idea

The original rail ticket scheme, first trialled in 2011, was the brainchild of Max Comfort of Stroud Common Wealth. Max noticed that the commuter trains to the capital were coming back empty in the morning and again in the evening en route to pick up returning workers.

Stroud town traders offer special deals to holders of any Stroud Special rail ticket. If visitors can find a better price on the Internet this will be accepted too.
