Canal Boat volunteers needed
Planned boat trips on the newly restored Stroudwater Canal near Ebley have created an exciting opportunity for volunteers to get involved.
The Cotswold Canals Trust has purchased an 8 tonne, 30ft long narrow boat, capable of carrying two crew-members and ten passengers at a time. The Trust has already taken delivery of the vessel, which is currently being repainted in the Trust’s distinctive green livery.
Operating from Ebley
The new boat is expected to take to the water near Ebley Mill in early March, with passenger services beginning a couple of months later. Trips of around 20 minutes will be on offer.
The boat and crew will also be available for private charters such as corporate entertainment cruises.
“We are sure that trips will prove popular,” says Rob Burgon, the Trust’s Trip Boat Manager. “Apart from the Stroud on Water Festival in June, people haven’t had a chance to cruise on Stroud’s very own waterway”
Funding through grants & co-sponsorship agreements
Up to £38,000 has been set aside for purchasing the boat, training the crews and setting-up the operation – and the Trust is busy looking for donors and sponsors.
One third of the cost has already been raised, thanks to a grant from Stroud District Council and a co-sponsorship agreement with Alun Griffiths Construction.
Recruitment task ahead
Rob Burgon comments – his first task is to recruit additional volunteers…
“We already have people to run our trip boat operation at Saul, some of whom are keen to help on the new boat.
“We need extra people to help us at Ebley – both to crew the boat and meet and greet the public.”
Cotswold Canals Trust Chairman Mike Guest said, “Having a trip boat on this stretch of canal is very important.
“It will raise much needed funds for further restoration, get the canal used and open it up for more of the public to enjoy.”
