Canal Volunteers Awarded

Canal Stars Shine Bright

Canal volunteers starred at Stroud Town Council Annual Awards ceremony at Stroud Subscription Rooms on Thursday 10th May.

Restoration Volunteers were named Environmental Champions in two separate age based categories… Under 25 years and 25 years plus.

Award Certificates and engraved silver stars were presented to the winners.

Pictured right on the lockside at Wallbridge are representatives from both groups.

Selection for the Award

Cllr Marjoram explained the rationale behind the awards… “The volunteers represent the community and the community is already benefitting from the excellent work they have done on the restoration."

He went on to say, “People once passed by this part of Stroud, now it is becoming a real asset – a place to stop and enjoy; as the restoration continues these benefits will go on developing.”

Jon Pontefract commented… “Some people wonder why volunteers are still working on the canal restoration when professional Civil Engineers have been contracted to do the job.

"The fact is there will always be preparatory and finishing work to do and the volunteers efforts have a real value to the project. Such work can save expenditure allowing funds to be spent on other aspects. Local people of all ages, individuals and members of organisations such as the Cotswold Canals Trust, come here to Wallbridge every Thursday. We still have a lot to do so… the more the merrier – come and join us!”
