Canoeing Competition at Capels Mill

Christmas Slalom Fun Day report from SVCC's Tony Chalk

Four local canoe clubs, Stroud Valley, Cheltenham, Wyedean and Thamesway took part in the competition on Saturday 13th December 2014.  Its success indicates that this will become an annual event.

Paddling through the winter

The competition’s aim was to provide a focus for clubs to keep paddling through the winter. The Capels Mill Competition has more than fulfilled that modest goal! The visiting clubs love coming to Stroud. They think the Capels Mill site is fantastic even though they have some wonderful places to paddle on their own doorsteps (e.g Symonds Yat on the River Wye)

Events for all ages

Twenty-four paddlers, aged between 10 & 60 years, took part in a circuit of four events in which two teams of 3 challenged each other for 1st place.

The circuit began with ‘The Twister’ – a fast slalom race. Next was the 3 x 100 metre sprint relay with specially adapted batons. The teams then played ‘Canoe Polo’ with our home-grown rules. The finale was a rapid trip down the River Frome, over the weir and back onto the canal for another trip.

The photos show how much fun everyone was having. Passers-by all commented how wonderful it was to see the canal being used so well.

Here are some email responses:

  • "They all want to take part next year!! A great event – thanks for all your work"
  • "A big thanks from us all at Cheltenham for organising it all. It was a fantastic day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Stroud CC are a very friendly bunch and made us all feel very welcome"
