ENews 2010-01
As many of you will already be aware, the Cotswold Canals Trust lost one of its most stalwart and hard working volunteers recently.

Roger Wells, the driving force behind the Trust's Maintenance Depot at Eastington, suffered a massive heart attack on the 30th December from which he never recovered.

Having joined the CCT in 1998 Roger soon became involved in volunteer activities. He was a dedicated and devoted supporter of the Trust and its aims, and at times held passionate views on matters relating to the restoration. Easily identifiable by his flowing locks and ever-lengthening beard, Roger was a man with an amazing knowledge of so many different skills and was always happy to share this knowledge and enthusiasm with his colleagues.

Roger will be remembered for his wit, his general good humour and for being an all-round good chap. He will be sadly missed by all those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him and who worked with him at Eastington, on Work Parties and on the 'Perseverance' trip boat operation.

As there will be a Post Mortem details of the funeral arrangements will be advised in due course.

Our thoughts are very much with Lorna, David and Jonathan at this difficult time.

Roger's funeral will take place at Gloucester Crematorium on the 19th January at 1:30pm. After the Humanist Service that will be held, family and friends are invited to Sharpness Dockworkers' Club.

Directions to the Crematorium can be found at and please email me at if you require directions to the Dockworkers' Club.

Lorna, Jonathan and David have requested family flowers only with donations in lieu made payable to "LW Clutterbuck, Funeral Director" and sent to 24-26 High Street, Cam, Dursley Glos GL11 5LE for the Cotswold Canals Trust.

Those of us who understood Roger's philosophy of life know that he will expect us to make best use of these donations – and the way to achieve this is via Gift Aid. The Funeral Directors have a Gift Aid donation form available for download at and Lorna would appreciate you taking advantage of this if you possibly can. Similar arrangements will be to hand at the Crematorium for those unable to go to Sharpness, and at the Dockworkers' Club itself.
