Muck in and Name the Mud Boats
Stroud residents are being invited to muck in and help name two new work boats for the Cotswold Canals Restoration project.
Stroud Town Council Grant
Stroud Town Council awarded a £15,000 grant to the Cotswold Canals Trust to go towards buying two mud boats which will be used for canal maintenance and to keep silt from blocking the channel.
The new boats have arrived and now need names. The town council has teamed up with Stroud Life to run a naming competition.
The boats are pictured above with Town Mayor Kevin Cranston flanked by CCT's Val Kirby and Ken Burgin.
Mayor Kevin Cranston said: “It will be great when Stroud once again becomes a proper canal town. We wanted residents to feel a part of this exciting project so we thought it would be great if residents could have the honour of officially naming the boats.
“Stroud has a wonderful community spirit and we hope the chosen names will represent that spirit and the town’s rich heritage.”
Cotswold Canals Trust Vice Chair Val Kirby commented: "The trust is grateful for the support of Stroud Town Council. The community involvement in the restoration is a joy to see.
"Local people have contributed in so many ways… giving their time and expertise as volunteers and becoming members of the Trust. These local people now have the opportunity to become part of the history of the canal by naming the much needed mud boats"
Open to Stroud Residents & Canals Trust Supporters
The competition is open to any Stroud resident or supporters of the Cotswold Canals Trust.
The winning names will be painted on the boats and the winner will get to officially name their craft.
Linked names — Expressing the spirit of Stroud
The unpowered boats will work together. They therefore require a pair of complementary names that link them whilst expressing the spirit of Stroud.
Deadline for entries is Friday 18th March
The winner will be announced at the Annual Town Meeting on Thursday 24th March.
The judges will be Stroud Life Editor Ben Falconer, Mayor Kevin Cranston and two members of the Cotswold Canals Trust.
Entries should include the two complementary names for the boats plus the entrant’s name, daytime phone number, address and email address (if applicable).
