Webcam on the Stroudwater
A webcam is now monitoring the water level at Ebley Mill.
The why & how
Stroud District Council’s Dave Marshall explains…
"The webcam provides the opportunity to monitor the water levels on this stretch of the Stroudwater.
"The single set of gates can be closed at times of high water levels in order that the excess flow can be deflected over the weir and into the Rover Frome just upstream of Ebley Mill.
"The system utilises SDC’s existing broadband and power with the camera mounted high on the building itself."
Stop – start flow
The image refreshes every ten seconds.
This 'freeze frame' effect creates an apparent stop – start flow of water when the gates are open. Similarly, cyclists appear to make rapid progress along the towpath.
Farsons Digital Webcams were originally conceived in 2009 as an aid to anglers.
The Tavistock based company covers rivers and canals throughout the UK and Ireland.
Stroud based companies may find an attractive marketing option by taking advertising space around the image.
There's a boat coming through!
If you are viewing the webcam image and the Ebley Mill Pedestrian Swing Bridge is not across the channel it means the trip boat Endeavour is about to pass through.
